After
Surgery for Acoustic Neuroma
Tips for after surgery The period after treatment is much more serious after surgery than after radiation. Acoustic neuroma surgery typically involves a period of weakness and unsteadiness, caused initially by the anesthesia, and then by the surgical removal of the balance (cochleovestibular) nerve, which is cut while removing the tumor. It's very important to take care after acoustic neuroma surgery. Surgery can really zap your strength and you may realize you don’t have enough energy so you might need complete rest. Herbs and vitamins can be helpful to regain strength. Exercises that improve balance and coordination are also beneficial. Some people take up tai chi to improve their balance. Dry eye is a frequent post-surgery problem where there is damage to the facial nerve. You have to make sure that the cornea of the eye doesn't dry out, because that leads to ulceration of the cornea and attendant scarring, both of which are potentially vision threatening. Tackling headaches after surgery is often a big issue, as is protecting the hearing in the opposite hear, as often hearing is lost or damaged after surgery, despite the newer, hearing preservation approaches to surgery.
